Almost half of 2019 has already passed and BBC is still maintaining their radio silence on Sherlock season 5. Some of the fans have started losing hope while others have stated that this is actually a good sign.

Cumberbatch and Freeman are busy
But there could be a simpler explanation. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are both extremely busy in the next few months with their other projects. Reports have stated that Cumberbatch is under a contract with Marvel to star in the second installment of Doctor Strange while Martin Freeman may be under a similar obligation as he is set to appear in in the second installment of Black Panther.
Considering this, it is understandable that it is not possible for the stars to work on Sherlock season 5. But the show’s massive fan base could also mean that BBC will bring it back to boost up their viewing numbers.
Moffatt and Gatiss working on Dracula
Right now, the show writers Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss are both busy with an upcoming project called Dracula. Both of them have stated in the past that they are prioritizing Dracula over any other project. Gatiss also said that even though they may start discussing the fifth season of Sherlock, it is highly unlikely that shooting will start until 2022 or 2023.
Fans have also been theorizing about what storylines could be followed in the next episodes. Gatiss has said that the Red-Headed League and the Engineer’s Thumb could work because they have a great plot for adaptation.
As of now, we will have to wait for the BBC to make an official announcement for Sherlock Season 5.
