Mercedes recalls over 60,000 GLK 220 because they broke the law

Daimler has recalled around 60,000 Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 CDI diesel engine-powered compact SUVs in Germany. The luxury SUVs were found to be equipped with software that did not qualify the emission test. This happened after the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) found that the software distorted emissions tests. The company in Germany recalled all the GLK 220 CDI SUVs produced between 2012 to 2015.

Mercedes Benz forced to recall GLK 220 over failed emission test

Daimler AG seems to be guilty of the infamous “Dieselgate” scandal that brought down rival Volkswagen AG from 2008-2014. The company has its own version of the scandal.

The company confirmed that the recall was made on 21 June. Daimler has agreed to cooperate with the BMVI, but it will appeal against the decision. The ministry will further investigate into the GLK 220 model, including both GLK 220 CDI 4Matic BlueEfficiency and GLK 220 CDI BlueEfficiency.

Germany’s biggest Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag revealed the Daimler emissions scandal earlier in April this year. According to the newspaper, the Federal Motor Transport Authority or the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) are already investigating the suspicious software used in the Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 CDI SUVs models produced between 2012-2015.

The test revealed that the SUVs met the emission limits only in some instances and requires a particular function to be activated. As soon as the software was deactivated during the tests, it exceeded the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission limit of 180 milligrams set by the European Union. The company also has orders to recall retrofit vehicles that have emissions-cheating software.

Previously, Daimler recalled 700,000 of its diesel engine vehicles all around the world, including around 280,000 in Germany. The recent recall is in addition to the earlier numbers.
