Ramadan 2019: Why do Muslims fast in Ramadan? When does it start?

Ramadan, the holy month of Islam comprises of a month of fasting by Muslims all across the world. In 2019, Ramadan will last from May 5 to 4 June. Everyone in the family abstains from eating anything during the daytime. Pregnant women, elderly and diseased people are exempted from the fasts.

Fasts in the holy month of Ramadan must not be broken unless someone is dehydrated. They should break their fast and re-hydrate themselves. During this time of the year, smoking, chewing gums, or engaging in sexual activity are not encouraged. Medications can be an exception in rare cases.

Muslims believe that fasting reminds them of human frailty. It also makes them realize how dependent they are on God for their sustenance. Staying hungry makes them compassionate towards the needy and poor. It reduces distractions and helps them focus on their relationship with God.

What is the reason behind fasting during Ramadan?

During Ramadan, Muslims don’t eat or drink during daylight. Meals are served after prayers, i.e. after sunset and before sunrise. The evening meal called Iftar marks the end of their fast each day. The time varies as per the daylight hours of the country. Here’s a list of Iftar timings in various countries:

  • UK: From 4 am to 8:30 pm
  • USA: From 5 am to around 7:33 pm
  • Australia: from 5 am to 5 pm
  • Saudi Arabia: From 4:30 am to 7 pm
