NFL: New England Patriots Haven’t Paid Josh Gordon Salary, Then Why Are They Keeping Him?

Josh Gordon is not having a good time in NFL as first he got injured and now his contract price has gone down. Despite the New England Patriots reinstating Gordon, things are not the same as before. The 28-year-old wide receiver was taken back by the Patriots on Sunday. Even though he is a member of the team, Gordon can’t come to practice sessions.

It is not just that, as part of the NFL rules he won’t even get his base salary unless he is fully recovered. The fact that New England is still one of the top NFL teams and have plenty of backup options for Gordon. The Patriots have put Josh on a non-football related injury list and his options are very limited.

Gordon has been placed on the injured player list, but since it was not related to the game. While he was under the Cleveland Browns, Gordon pulled his hamstring and was give rest for time unknown. As per the rules, the Patriots has reinstated him and placed him on a non-football injury list like Julian Edelman.

It simply means that Gordon can be taken off from the list anytime, but before that he can’t come to practice sessions. Since, the injury did not occurred during the football games, the Patriots are not required to pay Gordon his base salary until he actually plays any game.

When can Josh Gordon Play?

The Patriots can even cut Gordon out if they feel like, although there is no need for it. It simply means they don’t have to worry about the time taken by Josh to fully recover, as they are not paying him for the duration. New England Patriots have the limit as August 31 to take him out of that list until the NFL offseason.

If Gordon is still on the injured list, he can’t play for the Patriots until the Week 6 of regular-season games. Hence if the Patriots feel like they need to monitor the health of Gordon, they have more than a month for that.
