Netflix cuts out ’13 Reasons Why’ controversial suicide scene amid pressure

Netflix is taking a huge step and is going to edit out the controversial suicide scene from 13 Reasons Why. The suicide scene was originally a part of the first season that came out two years ago.

We knew that the scene and the show itself was controversial. But what happened that Netflix decided to cut the scene out after two years of the show is released.

This decision was taken ahead of the release of the Season 3. Hannah Baker, played by Katherine Langford, will be gone from the show. So we know that the story is going to take a new turn from where season two ended.

The official twitter account of Netflix released this statement on Tuesday morning:

When the show first came out it received a lot of backlash for having such graphic content. It struck a lot of debate around mental health and depression and suicide in teenagers and young adults.

The show was widely criticised as well for romanticizing the idea of suicide. The show makers obviously didn’t aim to do that. They tried to bring an important issue to light and mainstream media was the best way to do it.

Show maker Brian Yorkey said in a statement on Tuesday:

It was our hope, in making 13 Reasons Why into a television show, to tell a story that would help young viewers feel seen and heard and encourage empathy in all who viewed it, much as the best-selling book did before us.

Our creative intent in portraying the ugly, painful reality of suicide in such graphic detail in season one was to tell the truth about the horror of such an act and make sure no one would ever wish to emulate it.

But as we ready to launch season three, we have heard concerns about the scene from Dr. Christine Moutier at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and others, and have agreed with Netflix to re-edit it.

The show is expected to come out by the end of July or next month. The premiere date has not been decided yet.
