With the free agency starting, most of the teams and players have already made their deals. Meanwhile, the Lakers are still waiting for Kawhi Leonard to decide something and not spend anything from their cap space. The Lakers currently have $32 million, which could go to waste as most of the players have already been signed by other teams.

Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving went to the Brooklyn Nets, while Klay Thompson re-signed with the Golden State Warriors. The Philadelphia 76ers got Tobias Harris and Al Horford in an exchange deal for Jimmy Butler with the Miami Heat. Even the Boston Celtics managed to sign Kemba Walker, so Leonard is the only star free agent yet to make a deal. Here are the reasons why the Lakers are waiting so hard for Leonard and backup options for them.

The Lakers needs Kawhi Leonard

As of right now, Kawhi Leonard has not revealed anything about his new team and will decide it by the end of the week. One thing is sure, that whichever team Leonard goes to, has the best odds for winning the NBA 2020 finals. It is one of the reasons why the Lakers are waiting for Leonard, instead of getting other players.

Toronto Raptors showed it to the world how important top class players are for winning the NBA finals. The Lakers need a point guard and also someone who can support the duo of Anthony Davis and LeBron James from the other side of the court. Without Kawhi Leonard, the Lakers team would be in a lot of trouble as their stars and money will go waste.

Lakers Alternatives for Leonard

While most of the second tier players are now already signed up, the Lakers only have a few options left. Danny Green from Toronto Raptors, who is currently a free agent is on the radar for the Los Angeles Lakers. A few free agents which are yet to be signed include DeMarcus Cousins, Marcus Morris, Wes Matthews, and Kevon Looney.

Rajon Rondo and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are currently the next best players the Lakers have in their team. All these players could make a solid team if they are headlined by the James-Davis-Leonard trio. The Lakers will try their best and wait till the end of the free agency to sign in Kawhi Leonard.
