The Toronto Raptor’s NBA championship win this season, over a thin team made up of superstars in the Warriors, felt like a sign. A sign that the era of “superteams” in the NBA free agency was over.
This notion will be put to the test in the upcoming free agency period, with the Lakers’ case being particularly impressive. Now that they have freed up a max slot, do they go for conventional route and sign a superstar, or do they build a team? Whatever the answer, the prospect of super-teams themselves are quite exciting, so here are a few such interesting options:
#1. LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Kawhi Leonard
Kawhi to Lakers rumblings getting stronger & stronger. Iguodala likely to join Lakers after Memphis buyout. Danny Green & Seth Curry in Lakers’ scope. Lakers offered Rondo vet minimum & 24 hours to decide. Lakers on verge of building powerhouse.

Calling this simply a big three would be a massive understatement. This is a bazooka, one that would fire the Lakers to the top as far as favorites for the upcoming NBA championship is concerned.
Having 3 of the top 10, some might argue top 5, players in the NBA is just unprecedented. What makes this pairing even more dangerous is that their games are actually complementary, and they do look like they would fit well in a team.
#2. Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard
Clippers meeting with Durant was “intense” and “at one point Steve Ballmer was crying” but everyone grew closer and a big lesson was learned

The Clippers are the ones interested in making this pairing a reality. And while Durant’s injury will take a long while to heal, but when he does get fit, this lineup would be one of the best frontcourts in NBA history.
#3. Chris Paul, James Harden, and Jimmy Butler
Sources: Jimmy Butler expected to meet the Miami Heat in South Fla. Sunday. Butler/Rockets meeting likely early week in LA. Sixers haven’t ruled out working with Butler on sign-and-trades, which Miami and Houston need to acquire the All-Star guard.

The Rockets are trying their best to bring Butler to his hometown Texas, though they will require a lot of roster shuffling to make the move happen. Players like Eric Gordon and Clint Capela may have to leave.
And how that Harden and Paul seemed to have resolved their beef, at least in public, Butler would fit in excellently as a defensive anchor.
