Let us take a closer look at McGregor – all that he has been up to since his time away, and what are his plans for his upcoming fights.
McGregor vs Khabib: The Aftermath of UFC 229
The match between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov ended up in a loss for McGregor. This didn’t really come off as a shock or a surprise as Khabib was being hailed as the next big thing by many who know the sport. However, after the match, a brawl erupted where crew members of both the men were attacked and ugly violence followed. Following this, both the men were served a ban for a few months and were fined as well.
While Khabib hasn’t been in any major controversies following that, McGregor has been the poster-child for trouble. After McGregor vs Khabib, the Irishman was arrested on the charge of strong-armed robbery, he was then called out on Twitter for his racist comments against Khabib. McGregor even announced on Twitter that he is retiring from the UFC. However, all of that aside, he is now all set to return – as confirmed by him, again, on Twitter.
When is Conor McGregor Expected to Return to the UFC?
While there were speculations over his return in the past, as he was making unreasonable demands such as getting a share in the company, it has all been put aside and McGregor is all set to return.
As of this writing there are no concrete plans as to when the Irishman will make a comeback, but Dana White, the UFC President, has confirmed that McGregor has begun training and he is expected to return sometime in late 2019.
McGregor’s recent tweet pointed out that he has had 11 matches in the UFC so far, and it is now time for his 12th match. This has pretty much confirmed his return. We don’t know if this will lead to McGregor vs Khabib II, but here are some of his possible opponents:
Who is McGregor Likely to Face Upon His Return?
These are among the four biggest fights for the UFC megastar upon his return:
- Conor McGregor vs Justin Gaethje
- Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz
- Conor McGregor vs Daniel Cormier
- Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov
Gaethje has already been calling out McGregor. Nate Diaz is now back in the business so that option too, is open now. Given that Brock Lesnar has retired, Daniel Cormier is looking for a new opponent, and could a returning Conor McGregor fill that void? And finally, there’s always a possibility that his first match back would be McGregor vs Khabib II.
