Kevin Durant got injured in Game 5
The Achilles injury to Kevin Durant in Game 5 has been confirmed. The Warriors star man will be out for the whole of 2019-20 NBA season, and these latest developments have affected the free agency atmosphere in the NBA. After all, Kevin Durant was one of the top targets for the New York Knicks, along with Anthony Davis. And now that the injury news has come out, source claim that still opting to sign Durant will be viewed s a big risk to the Knicks team.
Looking at the possibilities, only three years of the $160 million four year contract that Durant has can be maximized by the New York Knicks. And with Durant’s year-long lay-off, that fits quite well.
There is also belief in the Knicks camp that some of the risks from Kevin Durant’s signing can be mitigated if they manage to bring another All-Star to play alongside him. The names currently being thrown in the mix are Davis and Irving, though any chances of landing either are slim.
The New York Knicks are, apparently, not an appealing outfit for the Pelicans to think about trading Davis. Irving, meanwhile, edges closer to a deal with the Brooklyn Nets by each passing day.
The New York Daily News reports that the Knicks may have to look elsewhere, particularly, at Kawhi Leonard. But if they fail to get another All-Star along with Durant, the Durant deal will be seen as a huge risk for the New York outfit. After all, even with the year-long layoff, who knows if Kevin Durant will still be in the same shape as today comes the NBA 2020-21 season?
