The Ramadan dates change as the Islamic calendar works as per the moon cycles. This year Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on 4 and 5 June. The festival begins with the sighting of the Shawwal moon which is announced by a special astronomers’ board in Saudi Arabia.

The festival is celebrated differently across the globe. Many Muslim communities begin with morning prayers followed by sweet snacks to symbolize Ramadan’s end.

The crescent moon is also a powerful Muslim motif which is used for decorations.  Decorative strings of shiny green colour are often used on windows and doors.
