Did HBO’s Chernobyl reflect the truth of the real-life disaster?

People all over the world loved the latest mini-series launched by HBO, Chernobyl. It features the events of the nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 in Ukraine. Although fans are quite crazy about the show, there are several things that are not quite true to what happened in real life.

Khomyuk is fictional

Chernobyl on HBOFor example, one of the major characters, nuclear physicist Ulana Khomyuk represents several scientists who helped in cleaning up the disastrous event at Chernobyl. At the end of the series, it was mentioned that she is the representation of all the scientist who came together and helped in saving the lives of thousands of people.

Another goof up was the scene when Lyudmila Ignatenko was asked if she is pregnant by one of the doctors at Moscow Hospital. However, the reality is that she was asked if she has any kids and not if she was pregnant. The truth was revealed in Svetlana Alexievich’s book on the disaster.

Why the helicopter crashed?

Chernobyl episode 1 helicopterFans will also remember that there was a helicopter crash in episode 2 due to radiation. However, it has been revealed that the crash happened much later and it had nothing to do with radiation. Instead, the blades of the helicopter got tangled with a wire that the pilot was unable to see because of the smoke.

However, these discrepancies aside, the Chernobyl has definitely created an impact on the audience and increased awareness about the risks of nuclear disaster among the people.
