Why did Jaime Lannister leave Brienne of Tarth to go to Cersei on Game of Thrones?

Jaime Lannister turned things completely around in the previous episode of Game of Thrones. It was a heart-wrenching moment when Jaime leaves a weeping Brienne to go to King’s Landing. But why did he leave Brienne to go to Cersei?

The show probably wants us to think that he has changed sides. And he is going to fight for Cersei now. But, it is highly likely that he is actually going to kill his sister.

What happened in the previous episode?

The fourth episode, basically started off as a celebration episode. Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth finally hooked up, leaving the Jaime-Brienne shippers celebrating. The army starts disintegrating the morning after the celebrations. Jon Snow and Daenerys start off for their journey to fight the battle against King’s Landing. Tormund and the rest of the Wildlings head towards the North of the (now broken) Wall. But, Brienne stays back at Winterfell to protect Sansa. And Jaime announces that he will be staying there too as a guest. So, it seemed for a moment that they might end up having the rest of the time to themselves.

What led to Jaime Lannister leaving Winterfell?

But, soon they get to know about the ambush that Dany’s fleet faces. And Sansa had to say hurtful words to Jaime. She said, “I always wanted to be there when they executed Cersei. But, I guess I won’t be getting the chance.” But, in the dead of the night, Brienne finds Jaime missing. She sees him packing his saddle to leave. She pleads him to not leave for Cersei. She says that he is a good man. The entire scene leads us to believe that Jaime has finally made our worst fears come true. Jaime Lannister has finally switched sides and will fight for Cersei in the upcoming battle.

Will Jaime protect Cersei or kill her?

He tells Brienne that he is not a good man. He recounts all the bad stuff he did for the sake of Cersei. And finally he says that Cersei is hateful, but so is he. But, maybe Jaime was just leading to an action that is going to break his heart. He is the kind of person who might do a bad deed if it serves as a greater good for the people/realm. Just like he did when he killed Aerys Targaryen. So, maybe Jaime Lannister will ride back to King’s Landing to knock some sense into Cersei and if necessary, kill the evil monarch.

It will be difficult for him, but he might have the power to end the suffering and also fulfill the Valonqar prophecy.
