Cows may be sacred in India but cash cows are sacred everywhere, especially in Hollywood. It is therefore quite surprising that we haven’t seen Shrek 5 release date up till now.
It has been almost a decade since the release of the last installment of the franchise, ‘Shrek Forever After’ in 2010. The movie made over half a million dollars at foreign box-office alone, confirming the franchise’s status as a bonafide money-spinner. It was always safe to say, therefore, that Shrek 5 release will see the light of day eventually.
Will we see Shrek 5 in 2019?
Much to the joy of its fans, NBCUniversal announced that Shrek 5 release was in the pipeline. Eddie Murphy had confirmed the same in an interview, fuelling the rumor that the original cast was set to return.
Since then, though, the studio has been mum about the film’s cast or release date. With almost half the year gone already, it is doubtful whether we will see Shrek 5 release this year.
What we have learnt, however, much to our disappointment, is that Shrek 5 will be a reboot.

Will the original cast return?
For fans of the franchise, it is impossible to imagine Shrek 5 without hearing the voices of its original cast. But with the franchise being rebooted, could this mean that Shrek 5 will have a whole new set of actors voicing our favourite characters?
Thankfully, Producer Chris Meledandri has announced that the studio plans to keep the voice cast intact. This means that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas are all set to return and reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Puss in Boots, respectively.
Writing duties for the lovable Green Ogre’s latest adventure have been handed to an experienced hand in Michael McCullers. McCullers is the writer behind the Austin Powers franchise and has also written for Saturday Night Live. With an experienced comedy writer at the helm, fans hope Shrek 5 will be a welcome return to the franchise.
