Chernobyl Disaster is an accident which occurred from 25 to 26 April in 1986. It completely blew up the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station reactor, and today it is considered as one of the catastrophic nuclear accident. More than 4,000 people died due to exposure in harmful radiation.
As per the sources, more than a hundred people died due to cancer after the disaster. However, the effects of the accident are everlasting. In 1997, Svetlana Alexievich has also mentioned this horrendous tragedy in his book titled Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster. In 2005, his book won a National Book Critics Circle Award.

Chernobyl Disaster Timeline
In 1977, the first reactor was built in Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station. Later on, a town of Pripyat was created near the site for the families of workers. On April 1986, the workers started their job early in the morning. Everything was going fine until the boron carbide portion went inside the reactor. Later on, the reactor’s output increased which caused an explosion. After a few seconds, there was a second explosion.

Vasily Ignatenko’s true story
Vasily was one of the local firefighters of Pripyat. He tried to extinguish the fire from the roof of the reactor. The firefighters managed to run out of the factory. However, Ignatenko went into critical condition. He used to daily cough up internal organs of his own and excrete mucus and blood in his stools.
Later on, he died of acute radiation sickness after two weeks. His wife stated that they couldn’t even get the proper shoe fitting because of his swollen feet. So they had to bury him barefoot. Plus, his body was still radioactive, so they buried him beneath zinc in Moscow.
