Game of Thrones season 8 episode 3 recap: Bran Stark

Game of Thrones season 8 episode 3: What was Bran’s role in the Battle of Winterfell?

Bran was waiting there, as bait for the Night King. He did not do any physical fighting, but he had a crucial role to play in Game of Thrones season 8 episode 3. When the wights cross the barriers and reach Bran’s location, Theon and his men get ready. Bran tells Theon that he is going. Theon asks him where he would be going. But, before he could get an answer, Bran’s eyes go white and he wargs off. He wargs off into the Ravens, to determine the location of the Night King in the Battle of Winterfell.

At first, it did not seem like a good idea since the Night King would know about the three-eyed Raven’s presence at any given time. So, why would Bran draw any unnecessary attention?

The final moments of the battle

After some time, the Night King and his team of White Walkers reach Godswood. Theon Greyjoy was a loyal bodyguard and Bran thanks him before the final blow. Theon tears up and takes one final suicidal attempt by charging the Night King with a spear. Needless to say, the Night King breaks the spear in two and kills Theon almost effortlessly. Indeed, he died a hero. But, in the final moments when the Night King approaches Bran and they share a deep stare, we understand the twist. It was all a part of Bran’s plan to lure the Night King to him.

Arya goes for the kill

The Night King is distracted by the fact that he has finally found his target. So, he is not prepared when Arya Stark appears from nowhere and tries to stab him in the back. You might recognize the weapon that she used was back from the first season. This was the same Valyrian Steel dagger or catspaw which was used by an assassin who attempted to kill Bran back in season 1 of Game of Thrones. The dagger then went to Littlefinger, who then gave it to Bran. Ultimately Bran gave it to Arya so that she can save him when the time is right.

Coming back to the epic moment in Game of Thrones season 8 episode 3, the Night King gains the upper hand for a moment when he grabs Arya’s neck. But, she quickly drops her weapon and uses her other hand to catch it and stab the Night King in the gut. He and the rest of the army of the dead vanish immediately and the Battle of Winterfell comes to an end. So, Bran’s plan was working out the way he wanted to all along.
