Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger are indeed down. You’re not alone experiencing login issues. Users around the globe have reportedly been greeted with a ‘down for maintenance’ error message.
“Facebook is down for required maintenance right now, but you should be able to get back on within a few minutes. In the meantime, read more about why you’re seeing this message. Thanks for your patience as we improve the site.”
Users take out their frustration on Twitter
It is still not clear what’s the reason behind this outage, but as expected, Facebook and Instagram users quickly took it to Twitter to show their outrage. Some Facebook and Instagram users got quite creative and ended up creating quite funny messages to get their point across.

While some Facebook and Instagram users who were able to somehow login managed to navigate the site, a lot of the key functionalities like posting/deleting statuses and photos, were not working for them. These people too were greeted by the following error message
“Something’s gone wrong. We’re working to get it fixed as soon as we can.”
Since there hasn’t been any official word from Facebook or Instagram (apart from the above error messages), it remains to be seen whether this maintenance update will also bring any new features. For what it is worth though, several tech pundits expect that this maintenance update might also endup bringing changes to Facebook and Instagram’s algorithm. Whether these changes would be good or bad, that remains to be seen.
When will the downtime end?
It has been confirmed that users from US, UK, Australia, New Zealand have been affected the most and that both, the app as well as the web version, of Facebook and Instagram are down.
As of writing this, there has been no official confirmation just when will the users be able to get back online or how long will the downtime continue further. We will keep an eye out on FB’s developer page for any updates.
UPDATE: Facebook has finally responded on Twitter. Below is their official statement:
We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
