Former NFL star Colin Kaepernick’s lawyer feels that Maroon 5 should have refused to perform during the Halftime Show. He hasn’t played since 2016 after he decided to kneel during the National Anthem as a sign of protest against the racial inequality and police brutality.
The NFL star feels that the band should have shown solidarity to him. Adam Levine, Maroon 5 front man, came forward to defend the decision of the band to perform during the Halftime Show.
He even gave a hint that their performance will include a social message to show solidarity with Kaepernick. He said,
They will be [heard] – that’s all I want to say because I don’t want to spoil anything. To make people understand, we got you. We got you.
However, Mark Geragos was not satisfied with the defense taken by Adam Levine. He said it was just a cop out. Several other artists including Rihanna, Cardi B and Jay-Z have refused to perform.
Mark Geragos said that only saying that one is a musician and not a politician is not enough. Any musician who has some consciousness would understand the seriousness of the issue.
He believes that doing what others have done would be more effective. Kaepernick has been “blackballed” for standing up against systematic racism and oppression in the U.S.
The band was also scrutinized by a petition demanding that they should change their decision to show support to the former NFL star as well as the players who choose to kneel during the National Anthem.
Maroon 5 takes a stand on the Super Bowl LIII Performance
On Thursday, Adam Levine said in an interview,
I’m not in the right profession if I can’t handle a little bit of controversy. It is what it is, we expected it.
The band has no plans to change their decision. They will perform during the game between Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots.
